  • Yemen's Foreign Ministry has reported allegations that shells suspected of containing toxic substances were used on several front lines in Taiz.
  • A strategic analyst said reported symptoms following a Houthi attack were consistent with sarin exposure, but the allegations remain unverified.

Yemen's Foreign Ministry has called for a specialized technical investigation into allegations that shells suspected of containing toxic substances were used on several front lines in Taiz, western Yemen.

The ministry stressed the need for a technical assessment to establish the nature of the suspected substances and verify the reports.

Earlier, Yemeni strategic analyst Yasser Saleh told Al Jazeera that symptoms reported following a large-scale Houthi attack on the Kahlan area, southeast of Taiz city, were consistent with sarin gas poisoning.

Sarin is a highly toxic nerve agent classified as a chemical weapon. Exposure can cause severe neurological symptoms and can be fatal.

However, the allegations of chemical weapons use in Taiz have not been independently confirmed.

The call for an investigation comes amid continued fighting in Yemen, where allegations of chemical weapons use would raise serious concerns over civilian safety and potential violations of international law.
