  • The emerging preliminary arrangement reportedly encompasses steps on Iran’s nuclear program, maritime navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and economic incentives for Tehran, backed by Chinese and Russian guarantees
  • The breakthrough followed more than 12 hours of negotiations conducted by Qatari mediators in Tehran, after which the Iranian negotiating team traveled back to Doha to resume talks

An American delegation is preparing to join talks with Iranian counterparts in Doha following a reported breakthrough in indirect negotiations mediated by Qatar and Pakistan, Al-Araby Al-Jadeed reported on Saturday in an exclusive.

Sources close to the mediation track said that the progress follows a visit to Tehran on Friday by a Qatari delegation headed by the senior adviser to Qatar's prime minister and minister of foreign affairs.

The impending arrival of US representatives in the Qatari capital is intended to pave the way for a formal return to the negotiating track.

The sources noted that preliminary understandings address foundational issues, including measures regarding Iran's nuclear dossier, security of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz, and financial incentives for Tehran, with China and Russia reportedly slated to act as guarantors of the proposed agreement. While mediators expressed interest in facilitating face-to-face discussions, the sources did not confirm whether direct talks would definitively take place.

An Iranian source told the outlet that interactions continue through intermediaries, stating that one of Iran’s deputy foreign ministers is currently in Doha to facilitate communication with Qatari interlocutors.

The diplomatic push comes after Qatari mediators concluded an extensive round of talks in Tehran on Friday lasting over 12 hours, according to reporting by US outlet Axios.

The discussions are part of accelerated efforts to prevent a renewed escalation ahead of the upcoming US midterm congressional elections. Diplomatic sources cited by Axios stated that the Iranian negotiating team accompanied the Qatari envoys on their return flight to Doha to resume deliberations on Saturday, noting that Qatari mediators maintained regular coordination with the White House throughout the sessions.

The latest round follows a prior draft proposal submitted to Tehran aiming to de-escalate the broader conflict. A source briefed on the negotiations told Reuters earlier in the week that the draft envisions a seven-day framework designed to address bilateral security concerns and implement daily confidence-building steps.

The Washington Post previously reported that US Vice President JD Vance had conveyed a proposal via Qatari mediation to Mohsen Rezaei, Secretary-General of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, suggesting an imminent meeting between senior officials that Vance could potentially lead. Official details regarding the specific composition of the US delegation traveling to Doha have not yet been publicly disclosed.
