Saudi Arabia has stressed the importance of opening channels of negotiation to prevent a return to military escalation, following a meeting between senior officials from countries party to the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement and Iranian officials in Tehran on Monday.

In a statement, the Saudi Foreign Ministry emphasised the need for “positive and practical engagement of the parties to the crisis” to contribute to resolving the war with Iran through dialogue and diplomacy.

The ministry also expressed support for mediation efforts undertaken by Qatar and Pakistan to end the US-Iran war, underscoring the importance of diplomatic initiatives in preventing a renewed escalation of hostilities.

Riyadh’s statement came after the meeting in Tehran, which brought together senior officials from states party to the Mecca Joint Defence Agreement and Iranian representatives. The discussions took place amid ongoing efforts to address the conflict through diplomatic channels and reduce the risk of a return to military confrontation.

The Saudi Foreign Ministry’s remarks highlighted negotiations, dialogue and mediation as key elements in efforts to resolve the crisis, while reaffirming the kingdom’s support for the diplomatic initiatives led by Qatar and Pakistan.

The ministry did not provide further details in the statement about the discussions held during the meeting or identify specific steps agreed upon by the participants.
