  • The measure follows protests on Oct. 17 that escalated into widespread violence and public disorder
  • The local ban in France's third-largest city comes ahead of planned nationwide rallies scheduled for the same day.

Local French authorities have banned all public demonstrations in Lyon scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 24, following widespread "violence" during protests held the previous weekend.

In a statement released on Thursday, the Prefecture of the Rhône region stated that the regional prefect issued a decree prohibiting all protests across France's third-largest city.

The decision was taken "in light of the events that occurred on October 17," when street demonstrations descended into large-scale unrest.

The security measure comes ahead of planned nationwide demonstrations expected across France on Saturday, as regional authorities act to prevent renewed clashes and preserve public order in Lyon.
