Police authorities in Paris ordered a new overnight curfew for designated areas of the capital starting Tuesday evening, following a prior night of restrictions that officials credited with restoring order after widespread weekend riots and commercial looting.

The fresh curfew is set to run from 21:00 GMT Tuesday until 04:00 GMT Wednesday.

It specifically targets Place de la République in the city’s central east, which served as a major site for weekend clashes between demonstrators and security forces, as well as the central Les Halles commercial district.

Alongside the localized curfew, police authorities issued an expansive ban on all public gatherings effective from 18:00 GMT Tuesday.

The public assembly prohibition covers sensitive locations across the city, including Les Halles and high-value retail zones such as the luxury jewelry district of Place Vendôme and the Champs-Élysées avenue.

The security perimeter also encompasses major transportation hubs and key institutional sites, including the areas surrounding the presidential palace, the National Assembly, and the Senate.
