  • Dorostaran was a member of Jaish al-Adl ("Jaish al-Zulm"), a Sunni militant group operating in the region.
  • Charges included providing logistical assistance, smuggling militants into Iran, securing safehouses, and facilitating attacks against the IRGC.

The Iranian judiciary announced on Monday the execution of a man convicted of reportedly facilitating a deadly 2024 attack on a police station and assisting subsequent militant operations in the country's southeast.

Omar Dorostaran, was executed by hanging on Sunday after his sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court.

According to the judiciary’s official news outlet, Mizan Online, Dorostaran was an active member of “Jaish al-Adl,” a Sunni armed group opposed to the Iranian government.

The agency added that Dorostaran was found guilty of providing “logistical support,” including helping armed militants enter Iran, arranging housing, and transporting operatives to execute attacks.

"The terrorist attack on the police headquarters in Rask, the attack on the IRGC headquarters in Rask, the attack on the Parud base, and the terrorist attacks on military headquarters in Chabahar in April 1403 were carried out with the support of Omar Darstaran," the agency added.

Sistan-Baluchestan, an impoverished region bordering Pakistan and Afghanistan, has long experienced conflict involving security forces, Baluch minority groups, and Sunni insurgent organizations.

The execution comes amid a fresh wave of clashes, with the IRGC confirming on Sunday the arrest of three additional Jaish al-Adl members during a raid.

Commenting on the border violence on Monday, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei accused foreign actors of “fueling instability,” stating that Tehran has "no doubt that destabilizing our borders is part of the malicious plot of the Zionist regime and the United States".

Human rights organizations, including Amnesty International, note that Iran executes more people annually than any other country except China, applying the death penalty to security-related offenses, armed rebellion, and murder.
