  • Iran says reopening the Strait of Hormuz is its main priority in discussions with the United States.
  • Tehran is demanding the lifting of US sanctions, while Washington remains focused on Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran’s main priority in discussions with the United States is securing the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said.

“We are at this stage focusing on the strait foremost, and our main concern is to reach a solution and to have peace and stability restored within this waterway,” Baghaei said.

He said Iran expects Washington to take “certain tangible measures,” including addressing what Tehran considers violations or interruptions of the memorandum of understanding reached between the two countries.

“Above all, the sanctions imposed by the United States must be lifted,” Baghaei said.

Baghaei said Washington continues to prioritize negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program, while Tehran wants the Strait of Hormuz issue addressed first.

Iran has previously proposed reopening the strategic waterway within seven days after the US accepts its conditions, with broader discussions on the nuclear issue to follow.

The disagreement reflects a broader gap between the two sides over the sequencing of any potential agreement. Iran has pushed for the reopening of the strait and sanctions relief before moving to nuclear negotiations, while US officials have continued to emphasize restrictions on Iran’s nuclear activities as a central issue.

The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is a major route for global energy shipments, making its reopening a key issue in efforts to resolve the ongoing US-Iran confrontation.
