Miliband says Gaza suffering "cannot be justified"

UK Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said on Monday that the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza and the West Bank was “a stain on the conscience of the world”, as he addressed the annual Labour Party conference in Liverpool.
Miliband said Britain would always stand against those seeking ‘Israel’s’ destruction, but added that such support “cannot justify the suffering the Netanyahu government has inflicted in Gaza and the West Bank”.
“This suffering is a stain on the conscience of the world,” Miliband said.
His remarks came as the Labour government has adopted a tougher stance towards the ‘Israeli’ government, including measures targeting settlements in the occupied West Bank.
Miliband has previously said Britain must support the rights and security of both ‘Israelis’ and Palestinians and has described a two-state solution as the basis of the government’s policy.
The foreign secretary’s comments came amid protests at the Labour conference over the government’s policy on Gaza and its proscription of Palestine Action. More than 50 people were arrested at a demonstration supporting the banned group, according to Merseyside Police.
Miliband was also confronted by activists at a restaurant in Liverpool, who called on him to lift the ban on Palestine Action.
Miliband’s comments on Monday echoed remarks he made earlier this month, when he described the suffering in Gaza as occurring “under the eyes of the international community” and said it was a stain on the conscience of the world.
