Lucy Dacus reaffirms pro-Palestinian stance

• The Boygenius singer joined hundreds of protesters outside the United Nations in New York.
• Dacus has repeatedly used her public platform to support Palestinians and advocate for a ceasefire in Gaza.
• She said artists have a history of protesting before they have a large audience.
• The musician has also spoken about professional consequences she believes she has faced because of her political views.

Lucy Dacus, the American singer-songwriter and member of indie-rock group Boygenius, joined a protest in New York against ‘Israeli’ Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the war in Gaza as he prepared to address the United Nations.

Dacus took part in the demonstration outside the UN alongside hundreds of protesters, including fellow Boygenius member Julien Baker. 

The protest was organised by Jewish Voice for Peace and called for an end to US support for ‘Israel’ and the war in Gaza.

As police moved to clear protesters from the street, Dacus said artists have a history of protesting even before they have a large audience, according to Rolling Stone.

The appearance was consistent with Dacus' longstanding public advocacy on Palestinian issues. Dacus and her Boygenius bandmates have previously supported ceasefire efforts and worn Artists4Ceasefire pins at the 2024 Grammy Awards.

Dacus has also spoken publicly about the potential professional costs of expressing political views. In a 2025 interview with The Guardian, she said she believed she had lost some professional opportunities because of her positions, but said she did not regret speaking out.

“Some opportunities that I’ve lost,” Dacus said, adding that she wanted to make decisions she could be proud of later in life.

Dacus first gained recognition as a solo artist with albums including No Burden, Historian and Home Video. She later joined forces with Phoebe Bridgers and Julien Baker to form Boygenius, whose 2023 album The Record won multiple Grammy Awards.

Dacus has previously used her social media accounts to highlight humanitarian causes and support Palestinians, alongside her involvement in broader ceasefire campaigns.

At the New York protest, Dacus remained among demonstrators as police warned protesters to leave the street or face arrest. Other participants included actors Hannah Einbinder and Elliot Page, comedian Caleb Hearon and Baker.

The demonstration took place as Netanyahu arrived in New York for the UN General Assembly, where his appearance prompted protests both inside and outside the United Nations.
