Amid the rubble of destroyed shops and homes, a cotton candy vendor in a costume made his rounds on Thursday, selling the sugary treat to children who gathered around him, according to footage filmed by Donia Alledawi in Gaza.
The vendor's trade reflects what the war did to Gaza's economy. A joint assessment by the World Bank, the UN and the EU found that 92% of businesses were affected by damage to buildings or equipment, and it put losses to commercial and industrial structures at $6.35 billion.
A Palestinian economist quoted in coverage of the report said that the few remaining private-sector jobs are tied to selling goods that enter from outside the Strip, often at small, makeshift market stalls. A cotton candy cart in the rubble is that kind of work.
