The organization warned that the actual number of deaths associated with wildfire smoke could be higher than current estimates, given gaps in monitoring and data collection.
The UN agency called for stronger monitoring of wildfire-related emissions, including black carbon and microplastics, as governments face growing pressure to address the health impacts of climate change.
Wildfire smoke contains fine particulate matter that can travel long distances and penetrate deep into the lungs, increasing the risk of serious respiratory and cardiovascular problems.
