The US State Department has approved an $800 million proposed military sale of Bell helicopters and related equipment to Iraq, according to a statement issued Monday.
The principal contractor for the deal will be Bell-Textron of Fort Worth, Texas.
The State Department said the proposed sale would support US foreign policy and national security interests by strengthening Iraq’s capabilities as a strategic partner.
“The proposed sale will improve Iraq’s capability to meet current and future threats by improving its rotary wing transport, reconnaissance, and air-to-surface targeting capabilities,” the department said.
The approval does not necessarily mean the sale has been finalized. US arms sales to foreign governments typically require congressional notification and approval before contracts are concluded.
