Four people suffered minor injuries after a 30-foot recreational boat exploded and caught fire shortly after filling its tank at a gas dock near City Island in the Bronx on Saturday afternoon.

Emergency crews responded around 2:00 p.m. following reports of a heavy blast and structure fire at the waterfront fueling station. Witnesses reported hearing popping sounds immediately before the 1999 Sea Ray vessel erupted into flames.

The blast threw one female passenger off the vessel and into the surrounding water.

"We heard a popping noise like a small explosion," witness Mike Becker told local reporters. "A woman went into the water. She got blown into the water... My father said that boat's gonna go up in flames, and it did."

Seventy-nine FDNY firefighters and EMS personnel arrived at the scene to suppress the intense fire. Despite the complete destruction of the boat, which was reduced to a charred shell, all four occupants—two men and two women—escaped with non-life-threatening injuries.

Nearby business owners noted that favorable wind conditions pushed the flames away from the fueling infrastructure and toward open water, preventing a secondary explosion at the gas dock.

Local boaters speculated that trapped gasoline vapors may have ignited due to an unventilated bilge system following refueling. NYC Fire Marshals remain on-site to determine the official ignition source.
