'Israeli' Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has claimed that Iran attempted to assassinate one of his two sons, without providing details about when or how the alleged plot took place.

In a phone interview with pro-government Channel 14, Netanyahu said, "Iran targeted one of my sons. Iran tried to kill, to murder one of my sons."

"Therefore, the security they get is not a luxury," he added, appearing to defend an agreement with the Shin Bet to provide security protection for his sons, Yair and Avner, as well as his wife, Sara, for at least five years, including if Netanyahu leaves office following the next election.

Without the protection, Netanyahu said, referring to the alleged would-be assassins, "they would succeed."

Netanyahu did not identify which of his sons was allegedly targeted, nor did he provide details about the circumstances of the purported assassination attempt.

Avner Netanyahu lives in ‘Israel’, while Yair Netanyahu, who is known for his hardline right-wing political commentary, has spent much of recent years in Miami.

A Channel 12 report said the alleged attempt occurred while Yair was outside ‘Israel’, but did not identify him as the target.

The report also said the alleged plot had been known to ‘Israel’s’ security establishment for several months but was barred from publication by the military censor.

There has been no publicly available independent confirmation of Netanyahu’s claim or details establishing who was allegedly behind the purported assassination attempt.

Netanyahu’s remarks came as his family’s security arrangements have become a subject of political and public debate.
