  • NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, US General Alexus Grynkewich, met allied defense chiefs to discuss national efforts to protect commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • NATO is not planning a formal deployment, as the alliance seeks to avoid direct involvement in the US-‘Israel’ war with Iran.

NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander, US General Alexus Grynkewich, met with allied defense chiefs this week to discuss member states’ efforts to protect commercial shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

Officials emphasized that the initiative does not amount to a formal NATO deployment. Instead, the alliance is helping individual member states coordinate their national efforts while keeping NATO itself outside the US-‘Israel’ war with Iran.

The United Kingdom and France are leading a separate coalition of about 12 countries preparing to protect merchant vessels once tensions ease.

The effort comes as governments seek to restore safe passage through the strategic waterway, a major route for global energy supplies.

Before shipments stopped in February, the Strait of Hormuz carried roughly one-fifth of the world’s traded oil.

Despite efforts by Western governments to establish a mechanism for protecting commercial shipping, officials acknowledge that any lasting arrangement to keep the waterway open will ultimately require Iran’s agreement.

The Strait of Hormuz, located between Iran and Oman, is one of the world’s most strategically important maritime chokepoints. Any prolonged disruption could have significant consequences for global energy markets and international shipping.
