  • Emergency teams deployed after deadly downpour.
  • Flooding sweeps away vehicles in nearby village.

A severe localized downpour triggered a sudden flash flood and landslide in northwestern Spain on Saturday evening, killing two women and injuring two young children.

The tragedy unfolded in Manzanedo de Valdueza, a mountain village located within the municipality of Ponferrada in the province of León.

Torrential rain sent water and mud cascading down a nearby hillside and rushing through the town's Church Street (Calle de la Iglesia).

The deluge inundated a ground-level cellar where six people had taken shelter.

According to police and emergency officials, two women died inside the inundated structure, while two young children were rescued and treated for minor injuries.

The Castilla y León emergency coordination center (1-1-2) received the initial emergency calls at approximately 7:38 p.m. local time.

Regional authorities dispatched the Ponferrada Fire Department, National and Local Police, medical units, and a civil protection rescue helicopter to the disaster site.

Emergency crews confirmed by Saturday night that all individuals involved had been accounted for and no persons remained missing.

The severe weather system also impacted nearby communities, including the village of Bouzas, where the overflow of the Meruelo River generated secondary flash flooding that swept away several parked vehicles.

Medical personnel and psychological support teams remain deployed in the region to assist affected families.
