A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Flores Island in eastern Indonesia early Saturday, according to the US Geological Survey.

The US agency located the epicenter off the island’s northern coast, about 68 kilometers northwest of Ende Regency, at a depth of just 10 kilometers.

The earthquake was followed by two aftershocks in the same area, measuring 5.6 and 5.9 in magnitude.

Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysical Agency warned that the earthquake could generate tsunami waves.

Indonesia and neighboring countries frequently experience earthquakes because they lie along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active zone stretching from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific Ocean.
