The death toll from the two earthquakes that struck Venezuela in June has risen to more than 6,000, Parliament Speaker Jorge Rodríguez announced on Monday.
On June 24, Venezuela was hit by two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, causing widespread destruction across the country's north, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira near the capital, Caracas.
The earthquakes killed 6,125 people and caused the collapse of about 200 buildings, most of them in La Guaira, where around 20,000 people are still living in temporary camps set up in stadiums, public squares, and along roadsides.
Last week, Venezuelan authorities began demolishing damaged buildings in the state, while official figures show that more than 850 buildings were affected.
The earthquakes also injured nearly 17,000 people.
The government has not announced the number of people still missing, but experts estimate that as many as 10,000 remain unaccounted for.
