Two students were killed and 15 were wounded in a school shooting in a province just north of the Thai capital Bangkok on Friday, local media reported in a preliminary toll.

“A shooting has occurred at a well-known high school in Bang Kruai district, Nonthaburi province,” local broadcaster Thai PBS said.

Police identified the perpetrator as a student.

There were ‌no further details provided.

In photos circulated by emergency workers, students streamed out of the Debsirin Nonthaburi ‌School, on the northwestern outskirts of Bangkok, as ambulances operated.

In ‌one photo, one person is seen lying ‌down on a stretcher outside an ambulance, while another is attended to by a doctor.

Thailand has one of the highest rates of gun ownership in the region, with around 10 million firearms estimated to be in circulation – one for every seven inhabitants.

Past promises of tightening gun laws have not prevented repeated shootings.

In February, a teacher died and a student was injured in ‌southern Thailand’s Hat Yai ‌district after a gunman opened fire at a school.
