Saudi Arabia launched strikes on Yemen's Houthi-held city of Hodeida, Houthi-media said on Friday, with a security source telling AFP Houthi sites were hit as tensions escalated after the group announced a maritime blockade of the kingdom and targeted its ships.
"A Saudi aggression targeted Hodeida province," the Houthis’ al-Masirah television reported in a post.
People in Hoedida also heard the sounds of explosions.
A Saudi ship was hit in the Red Sea on Friday sustaining minor damage to its hull, a Saudi transport official told state media.
"An official source at the Public Transport Authority stated that the vessel (NCC MASA), belonging to a Saudi company, was targeted while sailing in the Red Sea today... resulting in minor damage to the vessel's hull," Saudi's official SPA news agency said.
The Saudi-led coalition targeted Houthi military sites and destroyed targets threatening commercial shipping, the kingdom's main broadcaster said in a statement later.
"Houthi military sites targeted in Hodeida governorate... the targets destroyed were linked to the threat to commercial ships in the Red Sea," Al Arabiya television said in posts on X. It added that the Hodeid port had not been targeted and remains open to navigation.
