  • Two ADNOC shipping tankers sustained "significant damage" after being struck in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • One seafarer was killed and several others were injured in the attack.

The shipping arm of the United Arab Emirates’ state oil company ADNOC has confirmed that two of its crude oil tankers were hit while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

ADNOC L&S said the very large crude carriers Mombasa B and Al Bahyah were struck by projectiles and sustained "significant damage." The UAE Ministry of Defence said the vessels were hit by Iranian cruise missiles.

The company confirmed that one seafarer was killed and several others were injured in the incident.

"ADNOC L&S strongly condemns this attack on civilian shipping and the innocent seafarers serving aboard its vessels," the company said, adding that it was working with emergency responders and other relevant parties.

ADNOC has been involved in efforts to move Gulf crude to international markets through ship-to-ship transfers outside the Strait of Hormuz, according to Reuters.

US Central Command said on July 12 that it had supported the passage of more than 800 vessels carrying over 400 million barrels of crude through the strategic waterway during the previous two months.
