  • Harry Kane downplayed comparisons with Erling Haaland ahead of England's World Cup quarter-final against Norway.
  • Kane praised Haaland's scoring form while trailing him by one tournament goal.
  • Messi and Mbappé remain joint leaders in the 2026 Golden Boot race.
  • Kane said ending England's long trophy drought is his priority over individual awards.

England captain Harry Kane has described Norway forward Erling Haaland as a physical "machine" and a "beast," while firmly stating that the two marksmen operate as completely different types of players.

The comments came during Kane's pre-match press conference on the eve of Saturday’s highly anticipated World Cup quarter-final showdown between England and Norway.

Haaland has taken the 2026 tournament by storm, scoring seven times in his first four career appearances at a major international tournament.

His devastating two-goal performance to eliminate Brazil single-handedly propelled Norway into the last eight of the competition for the first time in the country's footballing history.

Contrasting tactical roles

Despite tracking just one goal behind the Manchester City forward in the current Golden Boot race -and raising his own lifetime World Cup tally to 14 goals- Kane insisted that their structural roles on the pitch should not be grouped together.

"I think we're completely different players. I know we're both strikers, but we're in almost two different positions," the Bayern Munich striker told reporters.

"Erling is incredible, his goalscoring record, physically he's a machine, he's a beast. His finishing is at the highest level and his goalscoring record speaks for itself.

I see myself as a different player, although I score the same goals. I like to maybe touch the ball a little bit more, be involved with the play a little bit more, but also can play as maybe the out-and-out number nine. I don't think it's one to compare ourselves."

Despite their exceptional individual forms, both Kane and Haaland are currently chasing Argentina's Lionel Messi and France's Kylian Mbappé, who both lead the Golden Boot race with eight goals in this edition of the tournament.

Prioritizing collective glory over individual awards

While Kane previously won the tournament's top goalscorer prize during England's 2018 campaign -which ended in a semi-final elimination against Croatia- the veteran forward made it clear that his ultimate focus remains strictly collective.

Ending a painful 60-year wait for England to lift a major international trophy since 1966 is his absolute priority.

"My main goal is to win the World Cup more than another golden boot, but I also know I'm a goalscorer, I'm the number nine, so if I'm scoring goals, it's obviously going to help the team," Kane added.

Having served as the spearhead for an England squad that has finished as runners-up in the last two consecutive European Championships, alongside quarter-final and semi-final exits in their past two World Cup appearances under manager Gareth Southgate, Kane issued a definitive rallying cry for the final leg of the campaign.

"Ultimately, until we win that trophy, there's always going to be that talk around England and the team but we're in a good position," Kane concluded. "Now we're in the final eight days of the final push. We're going to need everyone to be at the highest level to achieve our dreams."
