A Florida airport has been renamed after US President Donald Trump, marking the latest move by his supporters to place his name on public landmarks and government-related sites.
The former Palm Beach International Airport was officially renamed President Donald J. Trump International Airport on July 9 after the measure was signed into law by Florida’s Republican Governor Ron DeSantis.
Trump’s son Eric Trump celebrated the change by arriving at the airport aboard the family’s Boeing 757, known as “Trump Force One.”
“A beautiful day,” Eric Trump said during an appearance on Fox News from the newly renamed airport, which is located a short distance from the Trump family’s Mar-a-Lago resort.
Eric Trump said the renaming reflected his father’s connection to the area.
“I don’t think there’s anybody more synonymous with Palm Beach than Donald Trump and maybe all of Florida,” he said.
He also pointed out that the main road leading from the airport is already named “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard,” adding that passengers would now see “DJT” on their tickets permanently.
Passengers at the airport had mixed reactions to the name change.
Some welcomed the decision, with corporate pilot Chris Bailey telling AFP that Trump had “certainly done enough to warrant a name of an airport.”
Others criticized the move, saying the airport’s previous name had stronger recognition.
“Palm Beach is a better brand. People don’t really like Donald Trump,” local doctor John Manov told AFP, calling the decision “in poor taste.”
The airport renaming comes as Trump’s name and image have appeared on a growing number of public projects and institutions.
Supporters have backed moves including renaming government facilities and adding Trump branding to official programs. Critics have compared the trend to personality-driven politics more commonly associated with authoritarian governments.
Eric Trump rejected the criticism, saying that anything carrying the family name “is slightly controversial.”
He added that the president felt “honored” and “humbled” by the airport renaming.
