FIFA has initiated a formal investigation following reports of racist abuse directed at popular American streamer and YouTuber IShowSpeed during a FIFA World Cup 2026 match.
The incident occurred on July 3, at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida, during Argentina’s 3-2 victory over Cape Verde in the Round of 32.
IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr., was livestreaming the game from the stands while wearing a Cape Verde jersey.
Footage from his stream captured him confronting a supporter in an Argentina jersey, with the fan reportedly directing abusive language toward him, including the Spanish phrase interpreted as “go cry to the zoo,” which many viewed as racially motivated given the streamer’s Black identity.
FIFA issued a statement today confirming it was made aware of the incident and immediately opened an investigation.
The organization strongly condemned racism, hate, and discrimination in all forms, emphasizing that such behavior has no place in football or society.
The streamer, who boasts tens of millions of followers across platforms, has been actively covering the tournament.
Reports indicate he encountered similar alleged racist taunts, including monkey-like gestures from Argentine fans, during subsequent matches, such as Argentina’s game against Egypt.
This episode has drawn widespread attention online and sparked discussions about fan conduct at the World Cup hosted in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Many supporters and commentators have expressed solidarity with IShowSpeed and called for accountability.
