Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa finalized the formation of the country's first post-Assad transitional parliament by appointing 70 members to the 210-seat People's Assembly.
Among those selected was prominent Syrian actress Rozina Lazkani (also known as Rouzaina Amer al-Ladhiqani), marking what some described as a notable inclusion of cultural figures.
The appointments, announced by Syria's Higher Committee for People's Assembly Elections and reported by the official Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA), complete the parliament's composition.
Two-thirds of the seats were filled through an indirect selection process by local committees that began in October 2025, while the president exercised constitutional authority to designate the remaining third.
Lazkani, born in 1990, is a well-known television and drama performer. She studied scenography at the Higher Institute of Dramatic Arts in Damascus and began her acting career around 2013–2014. She gained popularity through roles in Syrian series, including appearances in "Al-Hayba."
The presidential appointees include 15 women, bringing total female representation in the parliament to 21 members.
The list also features relatives of civil war victims, former prisoners, and survivors of chemical attacks, according to committee head Mohammad Taha al-Ahmad.
Other notable figures, such as activist Aisha al-Dibs, were appointed alongside Lazkani.
This development represents a key step in Syria's political transition following the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime in December 2024.
The new People's Assembly is scheduled to hold its first session on July 6, 2026, serving in a temporary legislative capacity until a permanent constitutional framework is established.
Lazkani issued a statement accepting the appointment, expressing honor in serving the Syrian people. She pledged to advocate for reconstruction, the dignified return of refugees, and the promotion of culture and arts as vital elements of national identity.
Lazkani was among the artists who voiced their support for the Syrian revolution on social media platforms. She also shared photos and videos expressing her joy following Assad’s ouster on December 8, 2024.
