A cargo ship was damaged after being hit by an unknown projectile off the Omani coast in the Strait of Hormuz on Thursday, a British maritime agency said, reporting no casualties.
The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) said a cargo vessel was struck on its starboard side by an unidentified projectile, causing damage to the bridge. The ship’s master reported no injuries and no environmental impact. The agency added that the incident occurred 7.5 nautical miles (14 kilometers) southeast of Dahit, Oman.
British maritime security firm Vanguard Tech identified the vessel as the Singapore-flagged container ship Ever Lovely.
The incident came more than a week after a relative lull in the vital waterway, following the lifting of blockades on the Strait of Hormuz and Iranian ports under a memorandum of understanding that helped bring an end to the conflict in the Middle East.
It also comes amid ongoing talks between Iran and Oman on the future management of the waterway, as outlined in the agreement, where the idea of service “fees” has been raised, though the United States strongly opposes any charges or tariffs.
On June 12, another vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile in the Strait of Hormuz off the coast of Oman, according to UKMTO.
