‘Israeli’ health authorities announced on Friday that a man who recently returned from the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has been isolated at Rambam Medical Center in Haifa as a suspected Ebola case.

The individual developed symptoms including fever and headache shortly after his arrival.

According to the Ministry of Health, this remains a suspicion at this stage, with laboratory tests underway and results anticipated within 24 hours.

The patient is receiving care under strict isolation protocols at Rambam, which has been designated as a specialized facility for handling potential Ebola cases.

An epidemiological investigation is also in progress to identify and monitor any contacts.

This development occurs against the backdrop of a significant Ebola outbreak in Central Africa.

The current epidemic, caused by the Bundibugyo virus, was declared in the DRC in May 2026 and has since spread to parts of Uganda.

As of early June 2026, hundreds of confirmed cases and associated deaths have been reported, with the World Health Organization monitoring the situation closely as a public health emergency of international concern.

‘Israeli’ authorities have maintained that the overall risk to the public in Israel remains low, consistent with assessments for other Western countries.

No confirmed Ebola cases had been reported in ‘Israel’ prior to this incident.

Ebola is a severe viral hemorrhagic fever transmitted through direct contact with bodily fluids of infected individuals or contaminated materials.

Symptoms typically include fever, headache, muscle pain, and, in advanced stages, internal bleeding. The Bundibugyo strain involved in the current outbreak lacks specific approved vaccines or therapeutics, complicating response efforts in affected regions.
