The ‘Israeli’ military is set to initiate a pilot program in November allowing women to serve in tank units within the Armored Corps.

The military’s Chief of Staff Lt.-Gen. Eyal Zamir announced the plan, which aims to evaluate the integration of female soldiers into armored roles previously dominated by men.

The program will feature women-only tank units, ensuring that male and female soldiers do not serve together inside the same tanks.

This structure addresses concerns raised by leaders of Hesder yeshivas, who represent a significant portion of religious Zionist combat soldiers and had threatened to withhold recruits from armored units over mixed-gender arrangements.

The initiative follows a ruling by ‘Israel's’ High Court of Justice, which ordered the military to begin the trial by November 2026 after previous delays linked to the ongoing conflict.

The pilot is expected to be limited in scope, potentially resulting in at most a single company of female-crewed tanks across multiple brigades.

Women have already served in tank operations through all-female crews in the Border Defense Array, particularly the Caracal Battalion along the Egyptian border.
