  • Argentine supporters with rejected US or Canadian visas could receive a free TV
  • Promotion targeted fans unable to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup
  • Debate grows over visa access for international football supporters

An Argentine company launched an unusual promotion offering free televisions to football supporters whose visa applications to attend the 2026 FIFA World Cup were rejected.

Argentine conglomerate Newsan announced that the first 100 people who presented official documentation proving their United States or Canadian visa application had been denied would receive a free 32-inch Noblex television. Another 50 participants were offered consolation prizes.

The campaign was promoted on Instagram and applied to visa rejection notices issued between January 1 and June 10, 2026.

The initiative quickly gained attention among supporters disappointed at missing the tournament, especially those hoping to watch Lionel Messi in what many believe could be his final World Cup appearance.

US Embassy had previously stated that there are no special visa categories for World Cup ticket holders and that all applicants must qualify under standard entry requirements.

Reports and public discussions surrounding visa approvals have intensified during the tournament buildup, with fans from several countries expressing frustration over unsuccessful applications.

The promotion also fueled broader debate online over accessibility to major international sporting events and whether host nations should take additional steps to facilitate travel for supporters.

Social media users questioned whether countries hosting global tournaments should make attendance easier for international fans, particularly when events are promoted as worldwide celebrations of sport.
