Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says a series of coordinated strikes were carried out in the Gulf following an overnight escalation involving maritime and military targets near the Strait of Hormuz.
In a public statement, the IRGC’s public relations department alleged that a US military strike hit an Iranian oil tanker near the strategic waterway, damaging its engine room.
The IRGC said it responded by targeting a vessel it described as belonging to the “American-Zionist enemy,” identified as the Panaya, using missiles launched by its navy.
It further alleged that US forces struck an IRGC communications tower on Qeshm Island, prompting additional retaliation.
According to the statement, the IRGC Aerospace Force then launched missile and drone attacks on what it described as a US military helicopter base in a regional country, as well as the headquarters of the US Fifth Fleet.
The IRGC said it had previously warned that any “act of aggression” in the Strait of Hormuz would face a “more severe response,” adding that recent actions should “serve as a lesson.”
It also reiterated that disruption of security in the waterway would carry a “heavy price” for US military forces.
