  • Palestinian photographers Mohammed Abed and Mohammed Salem received the Golden Pen of Freedom on behalf of journalists in the Gaza Strip.
  • The award recognizes reporters working with AFP, Associated Press and Reuters amid ongoing conflict and heavy casualties.

Palestinian photographers Mohammed Abed and Mohammed Salem have accepted the Golden Pen of Freedom award on behalf of their colleagues in the Gaza Strip.

The honor was jointly awarded this year by the World Association of News Publishers WAN-IFRA to journalists working with AFP Agence France-Presse, Associated Press Associated Press and Reuters Reuters who have been reporting from the Gaza Strip.

WAN-IFRA said the award highlights the resilience of Palestinian journalists working under extreme conditions and honors those killed or injured while covering developments in the Gaza Strip.

The group framed the recognition as a tribute to journalists continuing to report despite ongoing dangers in the field.

Press freedom organization Reporters Without Borders Reporters Without Borders said more than 220 journalists have been killed in Gaza since October 2023.

The statement attributed the toll to the ongoing war, which the group described using strong language regarding responsibility, without independent verification of battlefield circumstances.

The award comes amid the continuing war in the Gaza Strip, where journalists face significant risks while documenting events on the ground.

International media organizations have repeatedly raised concerns about the safety of reporters operating in active conflict zones and called for stronger protections for press workers.
