The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the State of Kuwait issued an aggressive diplomatic condemnation on Thursday, lambasting Iran for a series of missile and drone strikes that targeted Kuwaiti territory earlier in the day.

In a formal statement dated May 28, 2026, the ministry described the military operation as a dangerous escalation, a direct threat to civilian lives and vital facilities, and a blatant violation of the country's sovereign independence and territorial integrity.

Undermining regional diplomacy

Kuwaiti officials expressed deep frustration over the timing of the military strikes, noting that they directly counter active peace initiatives in the region.

According to the ministry, the escalation arrives at a critical juncture when several "brotherly and friendly countries" are actively exerting earnest diplomatic efforts to reduce friction, encourage de-escalation, and spare the Middle East from wider warfare.

The ministry noted that the cross-border strikes severely compound the gravity of the regional situation, directly sabotaging international mediation frameworks intended to preserve shared stability.

"The Ministry demands that Iran immediately and unconditionally cease these criminal attacks, and holds it fully responsible for them, given their representation of a brazen aggression against the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait." - Kuwaiti Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement.

Citing UN resolution 2817

In its legal rebuke of Tehran, the foreign ministry characterized the strikes as a severe breach of established international protocols, pointing specifically to the United Nations Charter and UN Security Council Resolution 2817, which was passed earlier in 2026 to address regional hostilities.

By framing the drone and missile salvos as a defiance of binding international mandates, Kuwait signaled its intent to hold Iran fully accountable on the global stage for the sudden aggression.

Right to self-defense

As regional anxieties mount over potential follow-up strikes, the ministry concluded its statement by issuing a firm warning regarding its military options.

Leadership emphasized that the State of Kuwait maintains and reserves its full right to enact any and all necessary security measures required to safeguard its lands and defend critical installations against external threats.

The ministry stated that any future retaliatory or defensive actions would be executed pursuant to Kuwait's inherent right to individual or collective self-defense, strictly in accordance with Article 51 of the United Nations Charter and prevailing international law.
