South Korea’s Foreign Ministry summoned Iranian ambassador Saeed Koozechi to lodge a formal protest over an attack on a South Korean vessel, according to the Yonhap news agency.

Seoul demanded what it called “responsible measures, including steps to prevent a recurrence,” after the ministry said an Iranian-made anti-ship missile was “highly likely” used in the strike on the HMM Namu earlier this month. The vessel is operated by South Korean shipping company HMM.

The incident has escalated diplomatic tensions between the two countries, with South Korean officials pressing for accountability and further clarification from Tehran.

Following the meeting in Seoul, Koozechi rejected any Iranian involvement in the attack.

“Iran denies all allegations regarding this matter. We were absolutely not involved,” he said.

He also expressed regret over the damage to the vessel, according to Yonhap, while maintaining Tehran’s denial of responsibility.
