  • IAEA chief warns a direct strike on the Barakah nuclear plant could trigger severe radioactive release.
  • UN Security Council session follows reported attack near the UAE facility amid regional tensions.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Rafael Grossi, has warned that a direct attack on the Barakah nuclear power plant in the United Arab Emirates could lead to a dangerous release of radioactive material.

Addressing a special session of the United Nations Security Council, Grossi said off-site electricity had been restored at the facility, calling it an “important step for nuclear safety” following recent disruptions.

Grossi stressed that a direct hit on the plant could have severe consequences, including radiation leakage into the environment.

He said damage to power supply lines could increase the risk of reactor core damage, potentially leading to a meltdown scenario and requiring emergency protective measures such as evacuations.

The IAEA chief reiterated that attacks on peaceful nuclear infrastructure are unacceptable under international norms, warning that any escalation involving such facilities could endanger civilian populations far beyond the immediate conflict zone.

The Barakah nuclear power plant, located in the Barakah Nuclear Power Plant, has become a focal point of international concern after reported strikes in its vicinity.
