The ‘Israeli’ government approved plans to establish a new defense complex at the site of the former United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) headquarters in Jerusalem’s Ma’alot Dafna neighborhood, near Ammunition Hill.

The decision, made during a special cabinet session on Sunday marking “Jerusalem Day,” includes the construction of an ‘Israeli’ military museum, an enlistment office, and an office for the defense minister.

Defense Minister Israel Katz welcomed the approval, stating that placing these institutions on the ruins of the UNRWA compound represents “nothing more symbolic or just.”

‘Israeli’ officials have linked the move to the agency’s alleged ties to Hamas, including involvement in the events of October 7, 2023 , which prompted ‘Israel’ to end its agreement with UNRWA and demolish the compound in January 2026.

Palestinian officials have strongly condemned the project as a violation of international law and an effort to erase UNRWA’s presence while reinforcing ‘Israeli’ control over East Jerusalem.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry described it as a serious breach, amid broader criticisms referencing UN conventions and International Court of Justice positions on occupied territories.
The United Nations is reportedly considering a response to the development.
