  • Trump rejects Iranian proposal that would reopen the Strait of Hormuz while delaying nuclear talks, a senior official says.

A senior Iranian official said on Saturday that an Iranian proposal, so far rejected by US President Donald Trump, would reopen shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and end the US blockade on Iran, while postponing nuclear negotiations to a later stage, according to Reuters.

Trump says he is 'not satisfied' with Tehran’s latest offer

President Donald Trump, who has repeatedly stated that Iran must never obtain a nuclear weapon, said on Friday he was not satisfied with Tehran’s latest proposal. Iran’s foreign minister said Tehran remained open to diplomacy if the United States changes its approach.

Trump weighs military option but signals preference for deal

Trump also said on Friday that, “on a human basis,” he did not prefer a military option and told Congressional leaders he did not need their permission to extend military action beyond a legal deadline, arguing that the ceasefire had “terminated” hostilities. “Do we want to go and just blast the hell out of them and finish them forever? Or do we want to try and make a deal?” he told reporters at the White House, according to Reuters. Later in Florida, he said the United States would not end confrontation with Iran prematurely “and then have the problem arise in three more years.”

Domestic pressure grows over Strait of Hormuz tensions

While saying he is in no rush, Trump faces domestic pressure to break Iran’s influence over the Strait of Hormuz, which carries around 20% of global oil and gas flows and has pushed up US fuel prices. His Republican Party also faces potential voter backlash over inflation ahead of the November midterm elections.

Trump spends weekend in Florida amid negotiations

Trump spent Saturday in Florida at Mar-a-Lago and Trump National Golf Club in Jupiter, and also visited a dentist. In the evening, he was scheduled to visit Trump National Doral in Miami, which is hosting the PGA Cadillac Championship.

Reuters and other outlets had previously reported that Iran was proposing to reopen the strait before resolving nuclear issues. The Iranian official confirmed that this timeline has now been formally presented to the United States via mediators.

Tehran outlines 14-point proposal

According to Iranian media, Tehran’s 14-point proposal includes withdrawal of US forces from areas near Iran, lifting of the blockade, release of frozen Iranian assets, payment of compensation, lifting of sanctions, ending “war on all fronts” including Lebanon, and establishing a new mechanism to manage the Strait of Hormuz.

The United States and 'Israel' suspended their bombing campaign against Iran four weeks ago but remain far from a deal to end a conflict that has severely disrupted global energy markets, shaken financial markets, and raised fears of broader economic fallout.

Iran has been blocking nearly all shipping through the Gulf except its own for more than two months. Last month, the United States imposed its own blockade on ships from Iranian ports.

Washington demands nuclear guarantees

Washington has said it will not end the conflict without an agreement preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons, which was the stated goal of Trump’s strikes launched in February during nuclear negotiations. Iran insists its nuclear program is peaceful.

The senior Iranian official, speaking anonymously to discuss confidential diplomacy, told Reuters that the new proposal reflects a strategic shift by Tehran, shelving nuclear talks to create conditions for a broader agreement.

Framework links ceasefire, Hormuz reopening, and sanctions relief

Under the framework, the war would end with guarantees that 'Israel' and the United States would not launch further attacks. Iran would reopen the Strait of Hormuz, and the United States would lift its blockade. Subsequent negotiations would address restrictions on Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, with Iran demanding recognition of its right to enrich uranium for peaceful purposes, even if it agrees to suspend parts of its nuclear activities. “Under this framework, negotiations over the more complicated nuclear issue have been moved to the final stage to create a more conducive atmosphere,” the official said, according to Reuters.

Nobel Committee calls for release of Mohammadi

Separately, the head of the Norwegian Nobel Committee said on Saturday that the life of jailed Nobel Peace Prize laureate Narges Mohammadi was in the hands of Iranian authorities after her health “deteriorated seriously,” calling for her release to medical care. Reuters said it could not independently verify her condition.
