US President Donald Trump claimed Tuesday that Iran has asked Washington to lift the blockade imposed on the Strait of Hormuz, a vital global oil transit route.

In a post on his platform Truth Social, Trump said Iranian officials informed him that “the system in Iran is on the verge of collapse,” adding that Tehran was seeking the reopening of the waterway “as soon as possible.”

Shipping disruptions intensify

The statement came as the United States Central Command, known as CENTCOM, confirmed that 38 vessels had turned back due to the ongoing US maritime blockade targeting Iranian ports.

Washington began enforcing the blockade on April 13, applying it broadly to vessels entering or leaving Iranian territorial waters. US officials said the measures would be implemented “neutrally” across all nationalities.

CENTCOM has also stated that the operation is backed by more than 10,000 troops, along with dozens of warships and combat aircraft deployed across the region.

Escalation after failed talks

The blockade followed the collapse of an initial round of negotiations between the United States and Iran held in Pakistan earlier this month. Shortly afterward, Trump announced tighter restrictions on maritime traffic linked to Iran, including measures affecting the Strait of Hormuz.

The crisis comes amid a wider conflict involving the United States and ‘Israel’ and Iran, which began on February 28. The fighting has killed more than 3,000 people before a ceasefire was declared on April 8, raising hopes for a broader diplomatic resolution.

What’s next

Trump’s remarks have not been independently verified, and Iranian officials have not publicly confirmed any such request. The situation around the Strait of Hormuz remains volatile, with global energy markets closely watching any potential shift in US policy or regional security dynamics.
