Day 40 | US & Iran agree to last-minute ceasefire

The 2026 Iran War began on February 28, when the United States and ‘Israel’ launched large-scale operations, unleashing nearly 900 airstrikes within 12 hours on Iranian missile systems, air defenses, nuclear facilities, military bases, and leadership targets.

On April 8, the United States, Iran, and Israel agreed to a temporary two-week ceasefire, brokered by Pakistan, with Iran committing to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and all sides pausing military operations while negotiations continue toward a broader agreement.

Yemen’s Houthi movement entered the conflict early, launching missile and drone attacks toward ‘Israel’, expanding the war beyond the Gulf and Levant.

The assault followed years of shadow conflict, including direct missile exchanges in 2024 and a limited 12-day war in 2025 that damaged Iran’s nuclear and ballistic capabilities.

Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and senior officials were killed in the opening strikes.

Iran responded within hours, launching waves of ballistic missiles and drones at ‘Israel’, US bases, and targets across the Gulf.

Tehran restricted passage through the Strait of Hormuz, disrupting roughly 20% of global oil flows and driving energy prices higher.

Iran appointed Mojtaba Khamenei as supreme leader, while senior official Ali Larijani was killed in an ‘Israeli’ strike on March 17.

Iran strikes vital Saudi oil pipeline bypassing Hormuz: Reuters

  • Iran attacked Saudi Arabia's East-West pipeline, disrupting the Kingdom's sole remaining oil export route following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
  • IRGC claimed responsibility for the strike on Yanbu facilities, which experts warn will severely worsen the ongoing global energy crisis.

An Iranian military strike has targeted a critical Saudi Arabian oil pipeline responsible for transporting crude from the Gulf to the Red Sea for export, according to a Reuters report citing an industry source on Wednesday.

The attack threatens to severely impact global energy markets, as the targeted infrastructure served as the Kingdom's sole remaining export outlet following Iran's effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

Pipeline flows expected to drop

The strategic East-West pipeline typically transports approximately seven million barrels per day from Saudi Arabia's eastern oil production centers to the Red Sea port city of Yanbu.

An industry source warned that oil flows are expected to be significantly affected by the recent attack, with technical teams currently working to assess the full extent of the damage.

Energy experts caution that this severe disruption could exacerbate what is already being described as the world's worst energy crisis, which has been characterized by stalled global shipments and soaring energy prices.

IRGC claims strikes on Yanbu facilities

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) released an official statement on Wednesday claiming responsibility for the assault. The IRGC stated it launched coordinated missile and drone strikes against several regional targets, specifically citing hits on what it described as American oil company facilities located in Yanbu.

Prior to this latest escalation, Saudi Aramco utilized two million barrels per day domestically, leaving roughly five million barrels for international export.

Recent shipping data indicated that loading operations at Yanbu had successfully maintained an average of 4.6 million barrels per day—operating near its maximum facility capacity—despite previous attacks that targeted the same oil hub on March 19.

IRGC warns: Forces remain on high alert despite temporary truce

  • IRGC forces remain on maximum combat readiness, warning their "hands are on the trigger" if the truce is breached.
  • The statement projects military strength to prevent adversaries from exploiting the fragile two-week ceasefire.

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) issued a stern warning on Wednesday, asserting that its military forces remain at the highest levels of combat readiness despite the recently announced temporary ceasefire agreement between Washington and Tehran.

Forces remain on high alert

In a statement, the IRGC declared that its fighters' "hands remain on the trigger."

The military force emphasized the complete readiness of its missile and defense systems to deliver a strict and immediate response if the enemy - referring to the United States and 'Israel' - commits any new field miscalculations or breaches the established terms of the de-escalation agreement.

Analysts evaluate deterrence strategy

Military observers indicate this rhetoric is carefully designed to project unwavering strength, sending a clear message that Tehran's acceptance of the truce does not equate to military weakness.

Furthermore, the statements act as a preemptive deterrence measure intended to prevent any opposing party from attempting to exploit the two-week ceasefire period to secure strategic field gains outside the framework of ongoing negotiations.

Warning follows American statements

The Iranian military warning arrives just hours after pointed remarks from US Vice President JD Vance, recently described the current truce as highly "fragile" and warned that US President Trump's patience might run out.

The swift exchange of international rhetoric highlights the intensely volatile political atmosphere that persists despite the temporary suspension of active military operations.

George Kettaneh, Secretary-General of the Lebanese Red Cross, said the number of casualties is high and described the situation on the ground as “extremely difficult.” He added that medical teams are working tirelessly to evacuate the injured to hospitals, which are already overwhelmed.

The escalation comes amid growing concerns over a wider confrontation, with authorities urging residents in targeted areas to exercise maximum caution.

‘Israel’ launches massive airstrikes on Hezbollah targets across Lebanon

The ‘Israeli’ army carried out a wide-scale air assault targeting about 100 Hezbollah military sites and infrastructure simultaneously. The strikes, executed in just 10 minutes, hit areas across Beirut, the Bekaa Valley, and southern Lebanon, marking the fiercest attack since the start of Operation “Lion’s Roar.”

The operation focused on neutralizing key Hezbollah capabilities, including:

  • Intelligence headquarters responsible for planning attacks against ‘Israeli’ forces.
  • Fire and naval systems used to launch rockets toward land and sea.
  • Elite units such as assets of the Radwan Force and Air Unit 127, which manage drones.

The army said the strikes were based on precise intelligence collected over several weeks and claimed most targets were located within civilian areas, accusing Hezbollah of using residents as human shields. Measures were reportedly taken to minimize harm to uninvolved civilians.

The statement also carried political messaging, holding the Lebanese state and citizens accountable for Hezbollah’s positions. The army claimed the group’s Iran-backed involvement in the conflict has harmed Lebanon and vowed to continue operating with “lethal force” to protect ‘Israeli’ citizens and prevent threats to its territory.
