Russia warns of radiation risk from strikes on Iran nuclear sites
Russia has warned that targeting nuclear facilities in Iran could trigger widespread radioactive contamination, describing such attacks as a serious threat to regional and international security.
In a statement, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned attacks on what it described as peaceful nuclear sites in Iran, including the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, saying they “deserve strong condemnation by the international community.” It added that targeting such facilities undermines core principles of nuclear safety.
The ministry further warned that countries carrying out strikes on civilian nuclear infrastructure risk weakening the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons, as well as inspection mechanisms overseen by the International Atomic Energy Agency.
Russia also called on the IAEA to take a clearer and firmer position regarding the risks posed by potential attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities, urging the agency to explicitly outline the dangers associated with such actions.
