A senior Iranian official told Al Jazeera that messages have been exchanged between Tehran and Washington through Egypt and Turkey, describing the communication as a goodwill effort to reduce tensions.

The official said US President Donald Trump does not have the authority to impose conditions or deadlines on negotiations, adding that Washington has so far refused two key demands: compensation and recognition of what Iran described as aggression against it.

The official also warned that options such as closing the Strait of Hormuz and deploying naval mines remain under consideration in response to any “reckless” US action.

'Israeli' authorities have charged a 20-year-old man from East Jerusalem in connection with a planned attack targeting National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir.
