- Hackers disabled the website of the academy, redirecting visitors to a page warning that Hebrew will not be needed “for much longer,” alongside an image of Handala.
Hackers have taken down the official website of the Academy of the Hebrew Language, the institution responsible for regulating modern Hebrew in ‘Israel’.
On Wednesday, both the Hebrew and English versions of the academy’s website redirected visitors to a page carrying the message: “No need to learn Hebrew anymore. You won’t need it for much longer.”
The page displayed a logo of Handala Hack, a group linked to Iran. The hacking group has previously claimed responsibility for infiltrating devices belonging to 'Israeli' politicians.
Notably, Handala is a well known symbol of Palestinian resistance created in 1969 by Palestinian cartoonist Naji al-Ali. The character has long been associated with the Palestinian national movement.
