  • Thousands clash with police in Milan protests against the Winter Olympics and foreign security presence.
  • Demonstrators decry the involvement of ICE and call for exclusion of 'Israel' from events.

Street battles erupted in central Milan Saturday as thousands of demonstrators protested against the Milano‑Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics, expressing anger at the scale of the Games, the presence of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and the participation of 'Israel' in the competitions.

The demonstration, one of the largest since the Games opened Friday, saw segments of the crowd clash with riot police near the Santagiulia ice hockey venue after a march that initially remained peaceful. Police responded with tear gas and water cannons as some protesters hurled fireworks, smoke bombs and bottles. Several people were detained amid the confrontation.

Protesters chanted slogans against the perceived economic and environmental costs of the Olympics and voiced strong opposition to the deployment of federal US agents in Milan for the event’s security, a point of national controversy in Italy.

Calls for Exclusion of ‘Israel’

Many in the crowd also criticized Israel’s presence at the Winter Games, linking their grievances to broader international issues. Earlier in the week, student groups and pro‑Palestinian activists in Milan demanded that Israel be excluded from the Olympics over its conduct in the ongoing conflict in Gaza. Banners and chants highlighted their stance as the Olympic torch relay passed through the city.

At the opening ceremony Friday, Israel’s small team received mixed reactions from parts of the crowd, including boos, reflecting the politically charged atmosphere surrounding the event.

Security and Wider Backlash

Italian authorities had anticipated protests in the days surrounding the Games, deploying thousands of security personnel to manage demonstrations and protect international delegations. The planned involvement of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, an agency controversial for its role in immigration enforcement in the United States — has drawn sustained criticism from opposition parties, activists and civil liberties groups.

Organizers and officials have defended the Olympics as a celebration of sport and international cooperation, stressing high levels of planning for safety and sustainability. However, critics say disputes over policing, public spending and international politics have overshadowed much of the public discourse in Milan.

Protests are expected to continue as the Winter Games progress, with additional marches planned by student groups and grassroots organizations. Authorities remain on high alert for further clashes and disruptions, while Olympic events proceed under tight security.
