  • The US State Department is urging American citizens to leave Iran immediately—ideally via land routes to Armenia or Türkiye—citing severe flight cancellations and a high risk of detention amid a "deadly" internal crackdown.
  • The alert warns of widespread internet and communication blackouts, road closures, and public transportation failures, advising those unable to depart to shelter in place and secure essential supplies.

The US Department of State today reshared a critical security alert on X, urging American citizens in Iran to consider immediate departure options due to ongoing disruptions and heightened risks.

The alert, initially published on the department's Virtual Embassy Iran website earlier this morning, highlights intensified security measures, widespread internet outages, and transportation challenges across the country.

According to the alert, "Increased security measures, road closures, public transportation disruptions, and internet blockages are ongoing.

"The Government of Iran continues to restrict access to mobile, landline, and national internet networks. Airlines continue to limit or cancel flights to and from Iran."

"US citizens are advised to anticipate continued internet outages, prepare alternative communication methods, and, if it is safe, depart Iran via land routes to Armenia or Türkiye," adds the announcement.

Recommendations for US Citizens

The State Department outlined specific actions to take in the alert:

  • Depart Immediately: Develop an exit plan independent of U.S. government assistance. Flight disruptions may occur suddenly, so monitor airline updates directly.
  • Shelter in Place if Necessary: If departure isn't feasible, secure yourself in a safe location with supplies of food, water, medications, and essentials.
  • Stay Vigilant: Avoid demonstrations, maintain a low profile, monitor local media, and keep communication devices charged to update family and friends.
  • Enroll in STEP: Register with the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) for real-time security updates.

The advisory strongly cautions against travel to Afghanistan, Iraq, or the Pakistan-Iran border area.

It also notes that US-Iranian dual nationals must exit on Iranian passports, as Iran does not recognize dual nationality, and US citizens face a high risk of detention.
