  • UN reports over 88,000 displaced in Sudan’s Kordofan as fighting intensifies, leaving civilians with limited access to food, water, and medical aid.
  • Escalating clashes in Sudan’s Kordofan have forced more than 88,000 people from their homes, with humanitarian agencies warning of worsening shortages, according to the UN.

The United Nations has warned that escalating hostilities in Sudan’s Kordofan region have forced more than 88,000 people from their homes in less than three months, deepening an already severe humanitarian crisis.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), displacement has surged across Kordofan between late October 2025 and mid‑January 2026 as fighting intensifies between rival forces, especially in South and North Kordofan. Many civilians have been uprooted multiple times, with families scattered across numerous localities and seeking refuge in neighbouring states like White Nile and Khartoum.

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) described the situation in key towns such as Dilling as “highly volatile,” with access routes cut off and humanitarian aid severely restricted, pushing conditions toward crisis levels. Aid agencies report that food, healthcare and basic services are in critically short supply for those who have remained behind.

Humanitarian operations in much of Kordofan are constrained, with only a limited number of non‑governmental organizations able to reach affected populations under difficult security conditions, UN officials said.

Sudan's conflict

The displacement in Kordofan is part of Sudan’s broader conflict, now into its third year, involving the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The wider war has killed thousands and displaced millions of civilians across the country, with critical needs for shelter, food, water and medical care continuing to mount.
