  • ‘Israeli’ Civil Aviation Authority warns of “most sensitive security period” for international flights on January 31–February 1.
  • Authorities say airspace may be closed if safety cannot be ensured, prioritizing departing foreign flights.

The head of the ‘Israeli’ Civil Aviation Authority, Shmuel Zakai, has identified the upcoming weekend, January 31 and February 1, as the “beginning of a more sensitive period in terms of security” for international flights, signaling a potential escalation in regional tensions.

Message to Airlines

In a message sent Sunday to foreign airlines operating flights to Ben Gurion Airport, Zakai stressed that if the ‘Israeli’ airspace is closed, priority will be given to outbound international flights to facilitate the departure of airlines and passengers.

Zakai noted that current assessments from the Civil Aviation Authority and the instructions of the ‘Israeli’ Home Front Command indicate stability in the coming days but warned of possible escalation.

Potential Diplomatic Developments
He added that while the likelihood is low, renewed negotiations between the United States and Iran could help reduce regional tensions.

Airspace Closure Protocols

The message emphasized that if a reasonable level of safety cannot be guaranteed, the airspace will be closed without hesitation, as previously occurred in June 2025 and in April and October 2024. Zakai confirmed that defense systems remain fully deployed and at maximum readiness, with coordination mechanisms among relevant authorities operating intensively and effectively.
