  • King Abdullah II orders comprehensive three-year transformation of Jordan Armed Forces to modernize capabilities and strengthen defense.

His Majesty King Abdullah II, the Supreme Commander of the Jordan Armed Forces-Arab Army, has directed Maj. Gen. Yousef Huneiti, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, to develop a comprehensive strategy and roadmap to achieve a structural transformation in the armed forces over the next three years.

In a letter addressed to Maj. Gen. Huneiti, King Abdullah praised the dedication and professionalism of the Jordan Armed Forces, describing them as a national institution that every Jordanian is proud of. He commended the personnel for their courage in safeguarding Jordan’s borders, countering threats, and setting exemplary standards of bravery and devotion.

The letter, issued on 24 January 2026, outlined the key objectives of the planned transformation, emphasizing the need to enhance the armed forces’ capabilities to counter current and future threats, adapt to rapid technological developments, and operate effectively across expanding operational environments.

King Abdullah highlighted the importance of modernizing and restructuring the armed forces to master contemporary warfare techniques, including hybrid and unconventional conflict methods. He stressed that all army formations should follow precise and well-developed combat doctrines, characterized by simplicity, efficiency, and the optimum use of defensive and offensive capabilities.

The letter further called for investment in training, armament, and strategic operations, including the protection of key operational centers. King Abdullah also emphasized the need to establish a proficient command, control, and communication apparatus, employ modern defense technologies, and coordinate with specialized directorates and research centers. Collaboration with defense industry companies, both locally and internationally, was highlighted as essential.

A special focus was placed on cyber defense and offense, drone and artificial intelligence technologies, and the development of reserve forces capable of supporting tactical plans. Strengthening logistical support and ensuring efficient supply lines were also emphasized as priorities.

King Abdullah instructed that the Jordan Design and Development Bureau be transformed into a hub for research, development, and manufacturing of advanced defense technologies, in line with global standards and national needs. The letter also called for restructuring the funds and investment companies affiliated with the armed forces under the highest standards of governance and administration.

Concluding the letter, His Majesty expressed confidence in Maj. Gen. Huneiti and the Jordan Armed Forces personnel, pledging full support for efforts to develop and modernize the army. He stressed that the armed forces must remain at the forefront of military efficiency and innovation to protect the kingdom.
