US President Donald Trump said Thursday he will visit China in April to meet President Xi Jinping, while Xi is expected to visit the United States before the end of the year.

Speaking to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I look forward to seeing President Xi. I have always had a great relationship with the Chinese president.” He noted that bilateral relations were strained during the Covid-19 pandemic but have improved significantly since, highlighting China’s large purchases of US soybeans as a positive development for American farmers.

Improving ties

US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told Politico that relations between Washington and Beijing have reached a “very good balance,” and he sees little chance of the disputes escalating into a full economic conflict like last year.

Bessent, speaking from Davos during the World Economic Forum, said Trump and Xi could meet up to four times this year, building a productive relationship based on direct communication and tension reduction.

He also met China’s Vice Premier He Lifeng, who reaffirmed Beijing’s commitment to agreements previously reached between Trump and Xi.
