  • UK one, Norway two, Sweden three NATO troops deployed to Greenland in symbolic Arctic mission

European countries have sent a total of around 37 military personnel to Greenland this week in a symbolic deployment as part of plans to expand NATO’s presence on the strategically important Arctic island, reports confirm.

Denmark requested the deployments to help prepare for larger military exercises and to show solidarity among NATO allies amid rising tensions with the United States over Greenland’s future.

Under the Danish‑led exercise Operation Arctic Endurance, several NATO allies have contributed small teams of personnel to Greenland:

  • France: about 15 soldiers, including mountain infantry specialists, have been sent.
  • Germany: 13 troops deployed as a reconnaissance unit.
  • Sweden: 3 officers participating.
  • Norway: 2 officers deployed.
  • United Kingdom: 1 military officer added to the group.
  • Netherlands: 1 navy officer has also joined the mission.

These deployments, though limited in scale, are intended to reinforce NATO’s commitment to Arctic security and to reassure Denmark and Greenland of allied support.

Denmark also plans a larger and more permanent NATO presence on the island throughout 2026, including future rotational forces.

The moves come after talks involving U.S., Danish, and Greenlandic officials did not bridge differences over Washington’s stance toward the territory.

Greenland’s leaders assert the island is not for sale, while European allies emphasize collaborative security under NATO.
