  • World Council of Churches urges European Union to impose arms embargo and sanctions on 'Israel'.
  • The call comes amid the ongoing mass killing in Gaza and violations against Palestinians in the West Bank.

The World Council of Churches (WCC) has called on the European Union to impose sanctions and an arms embargo on 'Israel', citing the ongoing genocide in Gaza and human rights violations in the West Bank, according to a statement from the council’s local coordinator, Iskandar Majlatoun.

Majlatoun told Anadolu Agency that the council is “deeply shocked by the spiral of violence and the immense suffering” in the region. He said the stance is grounded in international law and human rights, condemning all attacks targeting civilians.

Humanitarian crisis in Gaza

The WCC highlighted what it described as an “unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe” in Gaza, where thousands of civilians, mainly women and children, have been killed, and nearly the entire population has been displaced amid widespread destruction, famine, and disease.

Majlatoun emphasized that the violence in Gaza did not begin in October 2023, but stems from decades of occupation, the blockade of the Strip, and systemic inequality.

EU engagement and political proposals

During a recent meeting in Geneva with European officials, the WCC presented a set of political proposals urging the EU to take concrete action beyond statements. Recommendations included suspending the EU-'Israel' partnership agreement, sanctioning 'Israeli' officials involved in illegal settlement activities, and imposing an arms export ban.
