A new, fast-moving low-pressure system classified as “category 3” by ArabiaWeather has begun impacting Jordan, bringing dangerously high winds and a sharp drop in temperatures, according to the director of operations at the regional forecasting site.
Speaking to Roya, Al-Tarifi noted that this latest system follows a previous Category 3 storm that concluded Sunday. While the weekend storm brought widespread rain, peaking in the southern governorates of Karak and Tafilah, this new front is defined by its velocity and intensity.
Warning for Amman
The traffic department for the Public Security Directorate (PSD) issued a warning to motorists urging the highest levels of caution as thick fog blanketed much of the capital, Amman.
Visibility in most areas of the capital has plummeted to approximately 30 meters (98 feet).
Severe Winds and Freezing Temperatures
The defining characteristic of the current storm is the presence of powerful wind gusts. Al-Tarifi warned that wind speeds are expected to reach between 90 and 100 km/h (56 to 62 mph) as the system intensifies throughout Monday.
Temperatures across most regions are currently hovering between 3°C and 5°C (37°F to 41°F).
However, the high wind speeds have significantly increased the "wind chill" factor, making it feel much colder. Heavy fog is also reported in several highland areas, severely obscuring visibility.
Field Reports: Amman and Ajloun
In the capital, rainfall has been reported in central Abdoun and major thoroughfares. Though wind speeds in the city were clocked at over 25 km/h early Monday, they are expected to climb. All primary roads in Amman remain open for the morning commute, despite anticipated traffic congestion due to the weather.
In northern Ajloun, municipal crews dealt with more than 20 emergency calls overnight, including reports of water flooding homes and flying debris caught in the gale-force winds.
While rain paused briefly in the north on Monday morning, thick fog continues to blanket the mountainous terrain.
Safety Recommendations and Outlook
The weather system is expected to exit the region by Tuesday, with a brief period of stability predicted for Wednesday. However, Al-Tarifi warned that another round of rain is likely by Thursday.
Authorities have issued the following safety directives:
- Attire: Citizens should wear heavy winter clothing at all times.
- Heating: Ensure the safe operation of heaters and proper ventilation to avoid carbon monoxide risks.
- Driving: Maintain increased following distances and exercise extreme caution in high-wind zones and fog-prone areas.
